A magical city surrounded by the beautiful nature of Swiss Alps and Lake Lucerne alone makes Lucerne (Luzern) one of the most gorgeous Swiss cities in my humble opinion.
Lucerne is located in the Northern part of Switzerland near the German boarder hence they mostly speak German here (but everyone speaks English so there is no language barrier to worry about). They use Swiss Franc here in which 1 CHF (Swiss Franc) is worth a little less than 1 Euro. There is a currency exchange at the main train station so you won’t miss it plus almost every shops and restaurants do accept Euro as well. The weather is cool and chill throughout the year, it doesn’t get hot that much but do get a little cold during the winter.
One of the best things about Lucerne is everything is within walking distant (unless you want to go up the mountain) and even so you need the public transport, buses and trains are very sharp on-time and is very convenient here in Switzerland.
1. LUCERNE MAIN RAILWAY STATION (LUZERN HBF)
Lucerne is only 40-50 minutes south of Zürich by train and most buses and trains stop here at the main railway station (or they call it Hbf) located at the centre of city. There is a big nice conventional centre, museum of art and best of of lake lucerne located right next to the station to welcome you right when you come out. Also, the most famous landmark of Lucerne Chapel Bridge is only within 3-5 minutes away by foot.
On the train from Zürich to Lucerne
Chocolate shop everywhere in the station (yumm!)
Right outside Luzern Hbf
KKL Luzern: Culture and Convention Centre & Museum of Art Luzern
2. CHAPEL BRIDGE (KAPELLBRÜCKE)
One of the most prominent landmarks of Lucerne is this gorgeous wooden bridge right standing right outside the main railway station.
3. MOUNT PILATUS
Going up the top of Mount Pilatus is one of my highlights in Switzerland even though I was a bit let down as there was a heavy fog that day I went up the mountain so I could barely see anything, nevertheless it was one of the most exciting experience for me.
Mount Pilatus is located just right outside Lucerne and can be reached by car (30 minutes) or by local bus (30 minutes also) which will stop at the cable car station on the foot of the mountain. Mount Pilatus is quite high even in the cable car will take about 40-45 minutes to reach the top and you need to change for another cable car at the halfway station to the top. An alternative is to take the Cogwheel railroad which will take more time but will give you a better view and it is apprently very popular as it’s one of the World’s most steepest Cogwheel routes you can take on this planet!
Arriving at the cable car station
The map and current condition of each area of Mount Pilatus
From up here you can see the whole city of Lucerne!
Me alone in the cable car
In 20 minutes to the top you will reach a ‘halfway station’ there is a small restaurant and toilets here plus you can take a quick stroll outside and remember you are literally in the middle of the mountain so enjoy!
Halfway station to the top of Mount Pilatus
Just got on the second cable car and now on my way to the peak – surroundings started to get very foggy at this point and you can barely see outsiide (not normally like this it was just bad day)
Walking on the peak of Mount Pilatus but the weather was too bad that day
Hotel Pilatus Kulm right at the peak
There is a small souveniour shop right when arrive at the top
This is what the view should look like on a clear day 😛
