Bonjour de France!
I discovered this little city in mid-southern France by pure chance as I tried to book my cheapest open flight from London at the time and Lyon showed up right on the top of the list. Only with a minimal amount of research I knew Lyon was good but didn’t know that it’d be this great! Lyon is way so much different from Paris which made me fall in love with France even more! Transportation is super convenient here. There are metro lines and tramway running within the city. The two major rivers Seine and Rhône rivers running through the city really brighten up the life of Lyon. Coming to Lyon was one of the highlight trips this year – it was totally unexpected yet very memorable and extraordinaire, no wonder why it is listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO.
Here are some of the highlights of what Lyon has to offer..
Lyon-Saint-Exupéry Airport is the one of the main airports in France. The architecture of the airport is what it really stands out. Everything is so pretty inside out!
Valmy is the western area of Lyon, it is very peaceful and quiet. There is a very nice riverside walkway which overlooks the hilltop castle and the mini eiffel tower.
3. The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière
The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is one of the first places you want to visit in Lyon, it is located right at the hilltop and can be reached by tramway or on foot. The basilica is free to visit and are stunning from both inside and out.
4. Fourvière Hill
Fourvière Hill is located right behind the Basilica. It is considered one of the best viewing spots in Lyon as it overlooks across the whole city of Lyon with the Rhône river and Bellecour plaza within sights.
5. Fourvière Archeological Park
Fourvière Archeological Park is an ancient ruin of a large Roman theatre. This place gives a totally different vibe from the rest of the city and is definitely worth visiting.
6. Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon)
Vieux Lyon is considered the largest Renaissance district of Lyon consists of many important buildings and old houses that you can rarely find elsewhere.
7. Lyon Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lyon)
Lyon Cathedral is right at the bottom of the hill, in front of the cathedral is a little plaza where people gather to play some music plus there are plenty of restaurants and bars around. Definitely a more lively part of the town.
Amorino dessert and café shop sell exceptional ice cream and macaroon. A must visit for you sweet-tooth.
9. Passerelle du Palais de Justice (Cable-Stayed Bridge)
This place is a perfect place for an evening stroll along the river to finish off your day.
10.Presqu’île & Place Bellecour (World Heritage Site)
Place Bellecour is the like the city center of Lyon where people gather and hangout. There are also countless of restaurants and café around.
11. Perrache & Local Market
Perrache is one of the main bus/train stations of Lyon to connect to other cities. It comes alive in the evening throughout the night with local stands selling a variety of souvenirs and foods.
I hope you see and learn new from the post! I would love to hear about your experience visiting Lyon or France in general or whether you have plan to visit soon!
Au Revoir de Lyon!
